Weather Alert – U.S. Consulate Tijuana

Location:  Southern Baja California Sur from Santa Fe to La Paz, including Cabo San Lucas

Event:  Tropical Storm Bud is expected to continue moving north along the western coast of Mexico toward the Baja Peninsula.  The Mexican Metrological Service issued a Tropical Storm Warning for southern Baja California Sur from Santa Fe to La Paz, including Cabo San Lucas.  Tropical Storm Bud is expected to produce rainfall amounts of one to two inches across much of southwestern Mexico, with isolated maximum amounts of four inches into Thursday, June 14.  This rainfall could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.  Swells generated by Tropical Storm Bud will affect portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico, western mainland Mexico, and the southern Baja California Peninsula during the next few days.  These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.  Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area beginning this afternoon.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid travel to the affected areas until the storm has dissipated.
  • Monitor the local news for updates.
  • Seek secure shelter.
  • Follow directions from local officials.
  • Monitor the Mexican government’s civil protection (“Proección Civil”) website http://www.proteccioncivil.gob.mx
