Speaker Series: Movements for civil rights in the United States

As part of the Speaker Series this consulate offers, Community Liaison Officer Matt Taylor gave a presentation about the various movements for civil rights in the United States.

The presentation was part of the university course entitled “Citizenship and Democracy” at the Tec de Monterrey. The class was composed of students from various academic disciplines.

The presentation defined the needs of various civil rights movements throughout the history in the United States as response to the traditional power structure.

The presentation covered the notable events and manifestations of four historical civil rights movements: African-American rights, Women’s rights, LGBTI rights and rights for people with disabilities.

Following each chapter, Matt elicited discussion from students about the current status and continuing challenges of each movement.
