Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Police action against unauthorized taxis at Monterrey’s Airport

January 22, 2016

The United States Consulate General in Monterrey is aware of press reports, which indicate that law enforcement officials are levying fines and impounding vehicles of unauthorized taxi services, including Uber vehicles, arriving at the General Mariano Escobedo International Airport.  Passengers have been required to disembark from vehicles and obtain an authorized taxi to complete their trip to the airport.  Uber is not authorized to pick up passengers at the airport at this time.  This is the first police action of which the Consulate General is aware to prevent Uber from dropping off passengers.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Mexico enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program(STEP) at www.Travel.State.GovSTEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, including the Travel Warning for Mexico, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  For further general information, please check the websites for the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City  and the U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey .
