(Second) Weather Alert: U.S. Embassy Mexico City

Location:  Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Durango, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Colima and Baja California.

Event:  The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens that Hurricane Willa made landfall near Escuinapa, Sinaloa and will continue to move in a north/northeast direction.  A Hurricane Warning is in effect for San Blas to Mazatlan while a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Playa Perula to San Blas (which includes Puerto Vallarta), and from Mazatlan to Bahia Tempehuaya.

  • Local municipalities and representatives of Civil Protection (“Proteccion Civil”) are providing real-time, localized guidance and are organizing voluntary evacuations to established shelters or advising people to shelter in place.  Travelers and residents should defer to local authorities for specific evacuation guidance.
  • Hurricane Willa will generate large swells that are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip tide conditions, both within the path of the storm and as far north as the coast of Baja California.
  • Many airports in the affected area are experiencing reduced services or cancelled flights.  We encourage travelers to contact their flight provider for the latest guidance:
    • Tepic International Airport (TPQ) and Mazatlan International Airport (MZT) are closed and will resume flights, at the earliest, on Wednesday morning.
    • Guadalajara Airport (GDL) is open, but is considering reducing or cancelling flights into the evening.
    • Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) remains open but with reduced commercial and vendor services.  Airlines may limit flights and operations.
  • Travelers by car should be prepared for possible road closures, particularly highways and tollroads that lead north out of Tepic and Nayarit.
  • Bus routes arriving to and departing from the affected areas may be reduced or cancelled.  We encourage travelers to contact their trip provider for the latest guidance.
  • The Embassy and all Consulates General continue to operate on normal hours and offer routine visa, passport, and other consular services.  The Consular Agencies in Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan will operate with reduced staffing and limited operations until further notice.
