U.S. Embassy partnered with WWF-TRAFFIC and the Mexican Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) to host a regional training and capacity building workshop on combating marine species trafficking in Merida, Mexico. Over 60 participants from across Mexico and Central America attended the workshop featuring leading researchers and officials on a wide range of topics. These varied from specimen identification to enforcement actions, including tools and resources available to support officials responsible for the management and trade of sea cucumbers and corals in the region. The workshop offered a valuable opportunity to strengthen collaboration in addressing illegal marine trade in the Caribbean region. This project was part of our Earth Day celebrations and also showed the U.S. commitment to protecting oceans and expanding international cooperation as part of the U.S. National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking.
