U.S. Embassy Mission Mexico has three Federal Benefit Unit Locations: U.S. Embassy Mexico City (servicing all states in red), U.S. Consulate General Guadalajara (servicing states in white), and U.S. Consulate General Ciudad Juarez (servicing states in green).
Our main services to the public are: Applications for Social Security cards; applications for retirement, disability, widows and dependent benefits; benefit entitlement issues; benefit fraud investigations, and the processing of benefit entitlement changes (i.e., address, death, direct deposit, etc.).
The FBU is responsible for the administration of the benefit programs for the following U.S. government agencies:
Social Security Online Services (mySocialSecurity)
Until now, you needed a U.S. mailing address to access Social Security’s free my Social Security account and use their online services. Now, many people without a U.S. mailing address can create a personal my Social Security account and use the online services with an ID.me credential. If you don’t already have an ID.me credential:
If you already have an ID.me credential, select “Sign In” from the my Social Security page and then sign in to ID.me. You will be redirected to your my Social Security account.
Note: if you had a my Social Security account prior to moving overseas, you will need to create an ID.me credential to use it from an international address.

The FBU operates on an appointment-only system. Use our online form to schedule an appointment or to obtain information. Please make sure that your contact information is accurate and up to date. We normally respond to email inquiries within five (5) business days.
The American Embassy Mexico City FBU covers the states of: Michoacan, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Tlaxcala, Estado de Mexico, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.
The American Consulate Guadalajara FBU covers the states of Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas.
The American Consulate Ciudad Juarez FBU covers the states of Baja California Norte, Sonora, Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas.
We observe the Mission holiday schedule and are closed to the public the last workday of the month.
