Warning: Dangerous Wave Conditions in Coastal Areas of Baja California Sur

Visitors to Mexico, including to local resort areas, should carefully assess the potential risk of recreational activities. Beaches on both the Pacific and Sea of Cortes sides of the Baja California peninsula, near Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, can be dangerous due to strong currents, rip tides and rogue waves.  Not all hazardous beaches in this area are clearly marked. Swimmers, waders and even people simply walking along the beaches have been washed into the ocean by rogue waves. Some have drowned and others have disappeared. Surfers and other water sports enthusiasts should always inquire about local conditions before going into the water.  Do not swim alone in isolated beach areas.  Strong currents could lead to dangerous conditions for even the most experienced swimmers.
