U.S. Citizen Services

American Citizen Services (ACS) is a unit of the Consulate General dedicated to serving the interests of American citizens within our northern Sonora consular district. ACS Unit employees assist Americans in a wide variety of ways, including routine and emergency services.

The Consulate General of the United States in Nogales would like to make American citizens aware that COVID-19 remains an issue in northern Sonora. While the COVID transmission rates remain moderate to low, the use of facemasks, sanitizer, and social distancing is mandatory.

For more information on COVID health measures currently in effect in the region, please visit sonora.gob.mx and https://mx.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizens-in-mexico-covid-19-information/.

The Consulate is currently open for limited routine appointments, including passport, notarial, and Consular Report of Birth Abroad services.

NEW: ADULT PASSPORT RENEWAL DROP-OFF PROGRAM

The U.S. Consulate General in Nogales is currently accepting non-emergency adult passport renewal applications on form DS-82 on Mondays from 11:30am to 12:30pm. This service is available to U.S. citizen residents of Mexico with a Mexican mailing address. You are highly encouraged to utilize the drop off option rather than scheduling an appointment if you are renewing your passport on form DS-82.

Appointments for first time passports, minor renewals, and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad must either be made online through our website https://mx.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/making-an-appointment/ or scheduled through NogalesACS@state.gov. If you need immediate assistance for urgent travel or other emergency reasons, please contact us at NogalesACS@state.gov.

Eligibility

You may use form DS-82 only if ALL of the following criteria apply to your most recent passport:

  • Undamaged
  • Issued within the last 15 years
  • Issued with a 10-year validity
  • Issued when you were at least 16 years old.
  • Issued in your current name (or, if you have changed your name since your passport was issued, you are able to submit a court order or marriage certificate documenting a legal name change).

You may drop off and pay for DS-82 adult passport renewals for all eligible members of your family and/or household. You may pay in cash (Mexican pesos or U.S. dollars) or with credit card. The fee for an adult passport book renewal is $110 U.S. dollars and $30 U.S. dollars for a passport card.

How to Apply

Prepared application packets MUST include all of the required items below or they will not be accepted for processing. Applicants with incomplete packets will be asked to return with complete application materials at a later date. Assemble the following documents for EACH DS-82 application:

  • Completed, ink-signed Form DS-82 .  Be sure to include your contact phone number and email address on your application form. NOTE: a Mexican mailing address should be reflected on page one.
  • Your most recent U.S. passport. Please make sure it is signed.
  • One 2” x 2” inches (or 5 cms x 5 cms) passport-size photograph less than six months old – click here for full photograph requirements.
  • A copy of your passport’s biographic photo page.
  • $110 or $30 USD fee to be paid at the U.S. Consulate General Nogales. You may pay in cash (Mexican pesos or U.S. dollars) or credit card.
  • A pre-paid return label and envelope from the courier service of your choice.

The processing time for your passport renewal takes an average of three weeks but in some cases, may take as long as five weeks.  Passports are printed in the United States and are subject to delays in mailing as well as processing.  Your current or expired passport submitted with your application will be cancelled and returned to you at the time your application is submitted. If your passport is still valid, it will be canceled and returned with your new passport. If you have urgent travel plans that do not allow you to wait for your new passport to be processed, you may contact us at NogalesACS@state.gov to see if you qualify for an emergency passport appointment.

If, upon further review of your application, we require more information or documentation, we will contact you at the email address indicated on the application form. You will have 90 days from the day that email is sent to respond to the request, or your application may be closed administratively. In all cases, passport application fees are non-refundable.

Once your passport application is complete and your passport has been received, we will return it to you via your pre-paid waybill from the consulate to your preferred delivery
