The U.S. Consulate General in Merida celebrated Earth Day by joining forces with local NGO in Merida’s Earth Day Fair on April 25 and 26.
The Earth Day celebrations are a part of Mission Mexico’s wider Going Green Initiative, which focuses on raising awareness and conservation within the Embassy-Consulate community.
Local NGO Merida Verde organized this year’s Fair to celebrate Earth Day, featuring eco-friendly businesses and their products, local NGO’s, educational workshops and conferences and green activities for kids.
Consul General Sonya Tsiros and Consulate members participated with a stand with educational activities, such as planting seeds to create a greener environment and showing how pollution threatens the marine ecosystem and water from Cenotes. They also y promoted activities such as collecting our own trash when visiting the beach or wearing eco-friendly products when in a Cenote.
At the U.S. Consulate General, environmentally-friendly initiatives are a year-round priority. We currently collect and recycle newspapers, plastic bottles, soda cans, metal and batteries. We have 30 solar panels that collect sunlight and transform this clean energy into direct current. By producing our own energy with solar panels, we reduce both our carbon foot print and our reliance on the power company.
