U.S. Consulate General in Merida supported International Coastal Cleanup Day, highlighting ocean conservation and American corporate social responsibility. Partnering with U.S. Company Coca-Cola, Consul General Sonya Tsiros and Consulate staff joined over 700 volunteers to clean up Progreso Beach Yucatan. This is the second year that the Consulate in Merida has participated in the beach cleanup to raise awareness of environmental conservation and inspire appreciation for Yucatan’s natural resources.
International Coastal Cleanup Day is one of the largest International volunteer events that the Ocean Conservancy sponsors to collect trash from the coasts. 2014 report includes more than 648,015 volunteers from around the world, covering more than 12,914 miles of coast and 12,329,332 pounds of trash.
