On February 7, participants in the ChicasSTEM program visited the U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez.
Vice-consuls led the tour during which Consulate staff engaged with this talented group of young women. The ChicasSTEM talked with women in leadership positions at the Consulate to learn about their academic and career paths. They were also challenged to think about how STEM knowledge and tools can be applied to running one of the largest U.S. consular sections and providing efficient customer service.
The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Karen Lips, an expert on amphibian biodiversity. She talked about her work with frogs and salamanders as well as her own career pathways and how they have led her to work as an advisor in the U.S. Department of State.
ChicasSTEM is a program sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez which offers hands-on activities and mentoring to young women in areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and offers them opportunities to explore their options for STEM courses of university study and careers. The program also helps them foster connections with peers and mentors.
